Our classmate, Jill Davis has an interesting family history related to Hollywood...

Paternal grandmother - Anna Davis.  She wore two hats: one as an extra in films and
the other as a costume designer - at one time working with Edith Head.

Maternal great uncle - Otto Lederer.  Make-up man/character actor. Worked
with Lon Chaney Sr. plus many more. Some of his movie credits are ...

East of Java (1935) ...  Makeup
Forgotten (1933) ...  Uncle Adolph
Sign of the Cross (1932) ...
One Stolen Night (1929) ...  Abou-ibn-Adam
Smiling Irish Eyes (1929) ...  Izzy Levi
From Headquarters (1929) ...  Bugs McGuire
Jazz Singer, The (1927) ...  Moishe Yudelson

Jill's father was Sid Davis - who at 4 years old was an extra in the silent Our Gang Comedies.  Sid continued working in other films as an extra or a stand-in until he was approximately 36 years old.   He then went on the other side of the camera and made educational films for schools, police departments, and the International Juvenile Officers Association.

Sid was John Wayne's stand-in and occasionally his stunt double from 1941-1952.
The picture below is from the movie Red River filmed in 1946 with Gail Russell.
John Wayne was 39, Sid was 30. (Sid turned 88 April 1, 2004)

Some of the other Wayne movies Sid worked on:

Flying Tigers 1942
Back to Bataan 1945
Dakota 1945
Flame of the Barbary Coast 1945
Fort Apache 1948
Big Jim Mclain 1952
Flying Leathernecks 1951

Sid also once stood in for the following people:
Raymond Burr, Charlie Chaplin, Leif Erickson, John Carroll, and Ben Johnson (in
Mighty Joe Young).

Jill's mother - Norma Davis, was a stand-in for Lorainne Day and Terry Moore (Mighty Joe
Young) who was once married to Howard Hughes.  Both Jill's mother and father were
in crowd scenes in the original King Kong when Kong escaped in New York City.

Jill lived next door to Ann-Margret in 1964 when Ann-Margaret still lived with her
parents.  Jill remembers seeing the pink Cadillac that Elvis bought Ann-Margaret.   And she used to see Ann-Margaret and Roger Smith ride their motorcycles.  Growing up, Jill lived in Benedict Canyon, just a few blocks away from Sandra Dee, Jeff Chandler, Fred Astair.

Today, Jill is happily married and lives in Portland, Oregon.  Her son, Steve, is 6'7", practices alternative medicine, and lives in Sherman Oaks, CA.  Jill belongs to the Red Hat Society www.redhatsociety.com.  The heads of the chapters are called Queen Mothers, and she is the Queen Mother of the Crimson Crones. www.crimsoncrones.net
